The Concordia University Chicago community today marks the passing and celebrates the life of Richard Hillert, distinguished professor emeritus of music, who died in the Lord the evening of Feb. 18 after an extended illness. We offer our condolences to his wife Gloria; his children Kathryn, Virginia and Jonathan; the extended family and his many friends.
Dr. Hillert, a member of the Class of ’51, was professor of music at Concordia from 1959 until his retirement in 1993. He is perhaps best known in the Lutheran community as composer of "Holy Communion Setting 1" in The Lutheran Book of Worship. It later appeared as a seeting of the divine service in Lutheran Worship, as well as in the recent Lutheran Service Book and Evangelical Lutheran Worship.
His funeral service of Holy Communion will be held at Grace Lutheran Church in River Forest, Ill., at 7 p.m. March 1. Visitation will be at the church 6-9 p.m. on Feb. 28 and 4-7 p.m. on March 1.
